The Hollywood reimaging/remaking machine just keeps rolling on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on an… sorry I was suck in a loop. I needed a reboot. Which is a term that should be reserved mostly for computers not movies. There is/are the rare exception(s). This may be one of them.

The year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years, but have been forbidden for law enforcement in America. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured, OmniCorp sees their chance to build a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine.

If you have read any of my articles you quickly have figured out I am a fan of the 80’s and early 90’s movies. Those were my formative film years so they have stuck with me and shaped my likes and dislikes. The original RoboCop (1987) isn’t exempt from that love.

After seeing the trailer for this new movie I decided to go back and re-watch the original. I wanted to see if it was still as good as I thought it was back then. Save the poor stop motion animation of ED-209 and the dated “vision of the future” it is still a solid movie. Peter Weller went to hell and back filming that roll and all that work paid off. The movie was gritty. The story is solid. I still rather enjoy it. Will this have the same staying power?

After seeing the cast they have assembled for this film I got excited. After seeing the trailer I got a little more excited. With remakes like this, penance needs to be paid to the original. There has to be the obligatory nod and tip of the cap. It looks like the might be doing that with the new film. We will find out for sure mid-February. What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than with your significant other and RoboCop? You will be loved AND kept safe!
